David C. Smith is Vice President, Health & Welfare Benefits. He is a native of Banner Elk, NC, and a graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the North Carolina Central University School of Law.

His background includes work in government as a regulator and policy advisor, with industry (Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina) in sales and marketing, and as an attorney, working with employers and insurance agents on compliance issues that employers face.

David is a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters, serving in leadership positions at the local, state and national levels for the organization.

David served as President of the North Carolina Association of Health Underwriters from 2008-09. His has also served on the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Board of Trustees, and as Chairman of the Durham Area Transit Authority. He has also served as a Deacon in his church.

David speaks throughout the country, mainly focusing on educating employers and agents, brokers and consultants on the impact of various state and federal laws on the purchase and regulation of employer-based health benefits, and has been recognized nationally for his public speaking, winning the NAHU 2011 William G. Wetzel Excellence in Public Speaking Award.
